The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on 19 June that is has acquired a new type of torpedo that it calls the Kaved (heavy) for its submarines.
“The torpedo systems possess advanced capabilities and characteristics, including increased precision and range,” the IDF said in a statement.
The announcement came after months of testing, including live-fire trials in which targets were struck. A senior naval source said the final test was conducted overnight on 18-19 June by Flotilla 7, the navy’s submarine unit. “This is an event that happens once in decades,” the source said. “This will safeguard our operational advantage over a [long] period of time.”
He said the Kaved is made by a non-Israeli defence company that he did not name, but that future upgrades and all maintenance would be conducted in-house by the navy. It will equip Israel’s three older Dolphin submarines as well as the new three new-generation boats, the last of which is expected to be delivered by the German company TKMS in 2019.
The source described the Kaved as a very high-speed weapon that could hit both surface and sub-surface targets, including those at depths of “hundreds of metres”. Unlike the navy’s previous type, the new torpedo has a digital sonar guidance system that “lets us conduct upgrades in the future without changing hardware” and makes the weapon difficult for a target to evade by manoeuvring, the source said.
While he did not give specific ranges, the source said the torpedo enables the engagement of targets that are beyond the range that the attacking submarine can be detected.

Latest Israeli Submarine’s Big Sail Seen In New Images
The photos were taken by German photographer Helwin Scharn on August 1, 2023, and he kindly shared them with The War Zone. They show INS Drakon — the latest and most advanced of Israel’s Dolphin II class attack submarines — after it came out of the construction hall in Kiel, northern Germany.
One of the most striking features visible is the enormous sail, by far the largest ever seen on an Israeli submarine. Although unconfirmed, it’s widely believed that INS Drakon will have a vertical launch system (VLS) module for submarine-launched cruise missiles, installed either abaft the sail or perhaps within it, which might explain the size increase in this area.
While at this point we can only guess what the sail might contain, it’s notable that concept imagery of Israel’s follow-on Dakar class submarine also reveals a much-enlarged sail, the implications of which we have discussed in detail in the past.

In its statement on the naming ceremony held in Kiel, the MoD described Drakon as a “strategic combat asset” that is “equipped with unique systems, including ground-breaking technologies that expand the range of the [Israel Defense Forces'] IDF's capabilities across various arenas”.
“Significant transformations are taking place in the submarine flotilla: operational methods are improving, the range of operational capabilities is being enhanced and expanded,” the MoD quoted Vice Admiral David Saar Salama, commander in chief of the Israeli Navy, as saying. “All of these place the submarine flotilla at the forefront of the campaign for Israel's security, as the extended arm of the IDF. With the addition of INS Drakon to the depths of our operations, our extended arm grows significantly in length and strength.”
The MoD added that Drakon will be delivered in 2025, after which it will sail to Israel. The ceremony also marked the commencement of construction of the new Dakar-class submarines that are scheduled for delivery in the early 2030s.
The MoD announced in January 2022 that it had reached an agreement with tkMS under which three Dakar-class submarines would be built to replace the three older Dolphins, with the first delivered in nine years.

Das sechste U-Boot für Israel liegt fast fertig in der Werft von Thyssenkrupp in Kiel. Der Vertrag dafür wurde vor 13 Jahren zwischen der Bundesregierung und Israel, damals bereits regiert von Premierminister Benjamin Netanjahu, unterschrieben. Dass es im Zusammenhang mit dem U-Boot Korruptionsvorwürfe gibt, ist bekannt.
Es ist Gegenstand einer Anklage wegen Bestechung vor einem Gericht in Tel Aviv. Angeklagt sind, neben dem ehemaligen Verkaufsagenten von Thyssenkrupp in Israel, mehrere ehemalige Mitarbeiter aus dem Amt des Premierministers. Ihnen wird Annahme von Bestechungsgeldern vorgeworfen.
Netanjahu selbst, der in der Sache nicht angeklagt ist, muss vor einer richterlichen Untersuchungskommission Rechenschaft ablegen. Diese zog im Juni 2024 ein für ihn verheerendes Zwischenfazit: Mit seinem Beschaffungsgebaren in Deutschland habe der Premierminister die Sicherheit des Staates Israel, seine auswärtigen Belange und seine wirtschaftlichen Interessen "gefährdet".
Heusgen-Position sorgte für Verärgerung
Jetzt wurde ein brisantes Detail aus den Verhandlungen rund um das sechste U-Boot bekannt. Wie das ARD-Magazin Panorama erfuhr, versuchte Netanjahu im Zuge der Verhandlungen über die U-Boot-Lieferung, die Entlassung von Merkels Berater Christoph Heusgen herbeizuführen. Netanjahu störte sich an Heusgens Forderungen nach politischen Gegenleistungen zugunsten der Palästinenser. Heusgen bestätigte den Affront gegen ihn im Gespräch mit "Panorama".
Die Bundesregierung wollte - in Anlehnung an Heusgens Forderungen - die U-Boot-Lieferung an die Bedingung knüpfen, dass Netanjahu den Siedlungsbau im besetzten Westjordanland stoppt und die Errichtung eines palästinensischen Staates an der Seite Israels zulässt. Über diese Verknüpfung der beiden Themen habe es in Netanjahus Umfeld "keinen Jubel“ gegeben, wie sich Heusgen erinnert. Heusgens Position schlug sich auch in den Akten der israelischen Untersuchungskommission zur U-Boot-Affäre nieder.
Entlassung Heusgens beim Botschafter gefordert
Mehrere Zeugen gaben zu Protokoll, dass Heusgen von der Netanjahu-Regierung Schritte zugunsten der Palästinenser als Gegenleistung für Marineexporte verlangte, etwa der ehemalige israelische Botschafter in Deutschland, Jakov Hadas, und der ehemalige Planungschef im Verteidigungsministerium, Amos Gilad.
In der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2010 oder in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2011 wandte sich der Netanjahu-Vertraute Ron Dermer an Harald Kindermann, den deutschen Botschafter in Tel Aviv, wie Panorama aus israelischen Quellen erfuhr. Dermer habe gesagt, dass er nicht eigenmächtig handle, sondern einen Auftrag ausführe. Er verlange die Entlassung von Heusgen.
Auf Anfrage bestätigt Merkels ehemaliger Topberater den Vorgang. Im Interview mit Panorama bekräftigt Heusgen, von israelischer Seite sei der Versuch unternommen worden, ihn von seinem Posten abzulösen. "Der Berater von Netanjahu, Ron Dermer, ist seinerzeit zum Deutschen Botschafter, zu Herrn Kindermann, gegangen und hat gesagt: 'Ich komme hier nicht als Privatmann, sondern in offiziellem Auftrag, und ich verlange die Ablösung von Heusgen'".
"Ungewöhnlicher" Vorgang
Der frühere israelische Botschafter in Deutschland, Yoram Ben Zeev, kann sich ebenfalls genau an das Ereignis erinnern. Panorama liegt eine schriftliche Schilderung Ben Zeevs vor. Im Rückblick charakterisiert Heusgen den Schritt von Netanjahu und Dermer als "ungewöhnlich". Wenn man aber sehe, wie Netanjahu heute agiere und welche Entscheidungen er treffe, überrasche es ihn nicht mehr, so Merkels Ex-Berater.
Ron Dermer, heute Minister für Strategische Angelegenheiten, war damals Mitarbeiter im Premierministeramt. Im Laufe des Jahres 2011 bekam er dort nach Panorama-Informationen unter anderem die Zuständigkeit für den Kontakt zum deutschen Springer-Konzern. Am 3.Dezember 2012 erschien in der Bild-Zeitung ein bemerkenswerter Artikel, in dem Heusgen in ein schlechtes Licht gerückt werden sollte.
Der damalige Bild-Autor Julian Reichelt schrieb dort: "Auf israelischer Regierungsseite heißt es, Merkel würde das Thema Israel zu sehr ihrem Berater überlassen, anstatt eigene Positionen deutlich zu machen. Heusgen habe zu viel Einfluss und wolle 'immer nur über Siedlungspolitik reden', sagte ein israelischer Regierungsbeamter zu BILD." Es ist unklar, ob es sich bei dem von Bild zitierten Regierungsbeamten um Ron Dermer handelte. Dieser ließ eine Anfrage von Panorama ebenso unbeantwortet wie das Premierministeramt von Benjamin Netanjahu.
Third Dolphin II SSK for Israeli Navy starts sea trials
The third Dolphin II-class diesel electric submarine (SSK) being built by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) for the Israeli Navy has conducted its first sea trials.
The future INS Drakon was put to sea for the first time at around 1000 h local time from tkMS' shipyard in Kiel, Germany, on 23 July.
Initial system tests were conducted northwest of Kiel Lighthouse and included propulsion and navigation systems testing.
Following the first sea trials day, the first static diving trials took place directly off tkMS' new submarine construction hall, starting around 2000 h local time on 23 July and continuing through to around 0700 h local time on 24 July. The submarine then headed for Kiel Bay to continue its sea trial programme. According to AIS (automatic identification system) portals, Drakon transited into Mecklenburg Bay near Rostock in the afternoon, before returning to tkMS shipyard at around 1100 h local time on 25 July.
The Dolphin II class incorporates a hybrid propulsion system based on air independent propulsion (AIP) fuel cells, enabling the boats to operate submerged for several weeks. The submarines are equipped with six 533 mm and four 650 mm torpedo tubes, which can employ up to 16 torpedoes and five missiles.
