Saab receives order from FMV for continued future fighter concept studies

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) regarding continued conceptual studies for future fighter systems. The order value amounts to approximately SEK 2.6 billion. The contract period is 2025-2027.

The order includes conceptual studies of manned and unmanned solutions in a system of systems perspective, and technology development and demonstrators. Saab will continue to collaborate closely with FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, GKN Aerospace and other industry partners. The order is an extension and expansion of the original contract signed in March 2024.

GKN Aerospace unveils UAV demonstrator within first year of the programme

Less than a year after launching a collaborative programme with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), GKN Aerospace today unveiled its UAV demonstrator, marking the first public presentation of the platform and a major milestone for the programme.

The initiative was announced in November 2025 with the objective of developing a UAV demonstrator and dedicated turbojet engine within 18 months. The effort brings together expertise in propulsion, aerostructures and systems integration from Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UK.

The programme includes the development of a dedicated turbojet engine, airframe and onboard systems. The demonstrator has been developed as a flexible platform for testing and evaluation, supporting the exploration of future uncrewed aviation technologies while providing valuable experience in how complex aerospace systems can be developed, integrated and manufactured on accelerated timelines.

The public display at The Armed Forces Air Venture 2026 includes a full-scale UAV mock-up together with the dedicated turbojet engine being developed as part of the programme.

Saab showcases Swedish KFS future combat aircraft concept

Saab has showcased one of the concepts it is developing for Sweden's Future Combat Aircraft Concept (Konceptet Framtidens Stridsflyg: KFS) effort.

Revealed as a full-scale mockup at the Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden, on 22 August 2026, the unmanned A3-001 is one of at least six conceptual KFS designs that the company is known to be working on for the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV).

“The uncrewed [A3-001] platform … could complement Gripen and future crewed combat air capabilities. The concept is envisioned for high-risk missions, such as electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defences, and precision strike operations in highly contested environments. With low observability, a high degree of autonomy, and the ability to operate across multiple domains, the concept illustrates a potential component of a future combat air capability,” Saab said.

The company said it is now in an intensive development phase where, together with the FMV, is exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems. “As part of this work, we intend to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030 as we support Sweden in considering [its] future options,” Peter Nilsson, head of Advanced Programs at Saab said, adding, “This separate Saab A3 system is our own concept for what could follow in the mid-2030s should Sweden decide to build on the work we are currently doing.”
