Two vehicles are under construction and scheduled to be delivered to the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) in late April, and will undergo a series of trials ahead of entering service in 2024.
The new Altay is the prototype of an initial production batch of 40 tanks. The vehicle features some important changes from the pre-production prototypes built by Otokar, such as the repositioning of some of the ammunition to racks on either side of the driver. Owing to problems in obtaining parts and subsystems from international manufacturers – including the bilge, fuel, hydraulic and preheat pumps, and hydraulic coupling components – these are now sourced from Turkish companies.

The agency said on its website that the Altay project would meet the modern tank requirements of the Turkish Land Forces and would acquire technology for the design, production, and testing of tanks and their subsystems in Türkiye.
The SSB set out the scope of the project – establishment of a serial production line, the supply of subsystems for the tank and domestic development of those of foreign origin, development of parts that are different from those of the tanks produced during the initial period, preparations for the production of the first tanks, and supply of the powerpack.
“We are moving to serial production of the Altay tank,” SSB president Haluk Görgün told public broadcaster TRT Haber on 29 May. “There are countries that want to work with us on this internationally, and we are continuing our negotiations with them.”

Abdulmenaf Erdem, project engineer at the Turkish Defence Industry Agency (SSB), told Janes on 12 November that Akkor trials were taking place and that the APS would enter service with the Altay in 2025. The SSB announced the signing of the Altay serial production contract on 29 May.
During his presentation earlier on 12 November, Erdem said that Akkor is being installed on Türkiye's Leopard 2A4 MBT as part of an upgrade, and on the Korhan light armoured vehicle, in addition to the Altay. Akkor consists of a high-speed hard-kill launcher, smart hard-kill munition, and a very high resolution radio.
Erdem also presented the Pulat APS, which has been installed on an entire battalion of M60T MBTs as part of an upgrade and is operational. Pulat consists of countermeasure modules, a control panel, and a power distribution unit.
