Portugal prosecutors probe legality of US use of Lajes base in Iran war

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1F8eoVrUix/LISBON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Portuguese prosecutors said on Saturday they had opened a probe into the legality of the centre-right government's authorisation of the United States' use of the Lajes Air Base in the Azores during the Iran conflict, following a complaint by an opposition party.
A longstanding agreement with the US allows Washington to use the base without prior authorisation during peacetime, but requires Portugal to give approval once hostilities begin.
Portugal, unlike neighbouring Spain, authorised several US transit flights through the Lajes air base, a decision that drew criticism from left-wing opposition parties and triggered a political debate over Lisbon's role in operations linked to the conflict with Iran.
In a statement, the Prosecutor General's Office said "the probe was opened following a complaint filed by members of the Left Bloc party," without providing further details.
Portugal's Foreign Ministry declined to comment.
The Left Bloc asked prosecutors in April to investigate the US use of the Lajes base, arguing it amounted to a "gross violation of international law."
However, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has said Portugal was not involved in the conflict and that the use of the Lajes base complied with international law, having been authorised only after assurances from Washington that any operation would be defensive, necessary and proportionate, and limited to military targets.
Portugal's prosecutors are bound by the principle of legality, requiring them to investigate alleged wrongdoing when there are sufficient grounds to do so, unlike in some jurisdictions where prosecutors have broader discretion to decide whether a case should proceed.
The Lajes base, located in Portugal's Atlantic Azores archipelago, is a strategic transit hub for US forces under a bilateral defence treaty dating back to 1951 and hosts the 65th Air Base Wing of the US Air Force, providing support for US, NATO and allied operations.

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/10/15/poli ... bombs-iranTrump has ordered the military to develop additional strike packages against Iranian targets that include “a lot of energy infrastructure” and the potential use of a MOAB, one of the sources told CNN. The same source said the phrasing used was that this attack would come “prior to US retrograde in CENTCOM AOR (area of responsibility),” indicating the administration could launch the additional strikes, attempt to declare victory and quickly pull everyone out.
A second source told CNN that military plans for striking Iranian nuclear sites, including Pickaxe Mountain, also explicitly call for using the MOAB. In recent months, Trump has repeatedly threatened to strike Pickaxe, where the US and Israel believe Tehran has stored components of its nuclear program, even after pausing full combat operations earlier this year, and Trump continues to emphasize that his goal is to ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.

https://www.dvidshub.net/news/257829/kn ... -all-bombsThe MOAB’s Specs:
It has a relatively thin aluminum casing designed to burst on a surface, not penetrate it. That creates a large blast with lesser fragmentation.
It’s a “smart bomb” with GPS-guided munition. It’s got stabilizing fins and inertial gyro for pitch and roll control.
It weighs 21,000 pounds!
The MOAB delivers an 18,700-pound warhead known as the BLU-120/B, which is made of H6 – a mixture of cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, TNT and aluminum.
It’s BIG – 30 feet long with a diameter of 40.5 inches, to be exact.
How Does the MOAB Reach Its Target?
The MOAB was loaded into a C-130 Hercules, where it sat in a cradle on an airdrop platform until the whole platform was pulled off the plane at a high altitude by a drogue parachute, which is used to slow it down. Once in the air, the weapon was quickly released from the platform to keep up its forward momentum. The grid fins then opened to stabilize it and guide it to its target.
Details zum BLU-120/B:
Contractor shall have all ATF licenses required to receive and test H-6 explosives with a net explosive weight (NEW) of 18,700 pounds, at the contractor's facilities.
Each BLU-120 weighs 21,615 pounds.
c. Contractor shall be able to remove BLU-120/B port covers at the Contractor's site that is approved to handle and potentially detonate (should a safety issue occur) a BLU-120/B. The Contractor shall be able to remove port cover screws, port covers, and seals from each port of each bomb body using applicable technical data and all required safety precautions deemed necessary. Each BLU-120/B contains five ports/covers.
https://sam.gov/workspace/contract/opp/ ... c758f/viewg. Contractor shall be able to install new seals using sealing compound IAW AMS-S-8802B, into each port of each bomb body and secure covers using and all necessary safety precautions.

While the history books have well-documented the day of MOAB's final day of testing -- March 11, 2003 at 1 p.m. a huge mushroom cloud could be seen from 20 miles away -- much of the design and ramp up for producing it have been little talked about.
The MOAB, nicknamed the "Mother of all bombs," was rapidly produced in-house by Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate officials at Eglin Air Force Base. It started out simply as an idea and quickly made its way to the lab for prototype production. The request came during Thanksgiving 2002 and was originally designed as a replacement for the BLU-82 Daisy Cutter. One unique characteristic would later define the MOAB from the Daisy Cutter: It was satellite guided or a "smart bomb."
https://www.af.mil/News/Features/Displa ... all-bombs/The first MOAB was delivered into the operational theater for the war on terrorism April 1, 2003. To date, none have been used in combat.

Israeli military conducts massive "power projection" operation near Iran's border
U.S. and Israel Draw Up Plans for Renewed Strikes on Iran After Elections
Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets conducted a sortie on Monday, flying as far as the Iranian border, according to Israeli and U.S. officials.
The operation, more than 800 miles away from Israel, took place a week before the Israeli elections and on the same day Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Israel's Ovda Air Base. The sortie wasn't connected to Hegseth's visit.
While some Israeli and U.S. officials said the sortie wasn't unusual and that it was meant to deter Iran, it could have led to a miscalculation, triggering an Iranian response and reigniting the war.
https://www.axios.com/2026/10/21/israel ... ran-borderThe exercise involved dozens of fighter jets and refueling aircraft, the sources said.
It followed a flight path consistent with a potential strike against Iran, passing through Syrian and Iraqi airspace.
As the aircraft approached the Iranian border, they turned around and returned to Israel, the sources said.
The intrigue: U.S. officials said the Israelis knew that Iran's air defense systems would detect the sortie.
According to the sources, Israel notified the U.S. in advance and described the operation as a training exercise intended for "power projection" and aimed at deterring Iran from launching attacks against Israel ahead of the elections.
However, some U.S. sources said they had the impression that Israel was hoping the Iranians would fire at the aircraft, providing a justification for launching strikes against Iran.
U.S. and Israel Draw Up Plans for Renewed Strikes on Iran After Elections
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/21/us/p ... rikes.htmlThe U.S. and Israeli militaries have developed specific plans for renewed strikes against Iran after the American midterm elections, according to U.S. officials and other people briefed on the deliberations.
As planning for a short but intensive operation progresses, the U.S. and Israeli militaries have stepped up exercises, flying planes over Iraq to practice strike maneuvers. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week to discuss new strikes, U.S. officials said.
The targets would likely include Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and missile and drone arsenal. Some officials say one more big round of attacks could push Iran’s economy over the brink and force the country to make diplomatic concessions after nearly eight months of conflict.
Still, there are reasons to be skeptical that a renewed war would be any more successful than the first phase of intense U.S.-Israeli strikes between February and April. Those rounds of fighting drove up energy prices and inflation around the world, eroded security in the Middle East and severely strained the Pentagon’s supply of missile interceptors.
It is also far from certain Mr. Trump will approve fresh strikes. Repeatedly this year he has vetoed plans for a return to major combat operations, including this month when the U.S. and Israeli militaries were nearly ready to attack.
All of the officials interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity to candidly discuss military planning.
